About the Links

link organization key

How and Why

In 1996-97, I had heard of the Internet. I read things on it at work. Then I discovered this thing called RealAudio at The Academy of American Poets Listening Booth. I realized I could actually hear poets read to me. At my request. I could pause. I could rewind. I could listening again. Without hesitation, I plunked down $2,000 for a computer in my own home.

Since, I have scoured the Internet for poetry audio links and collected quite a collection of links in my head. While I knew of many sites with large reservoirs of audio poetry links, I wanted a list combining all of these site's links organized by Poet so that I could see all of, let's say, Robert Pinsky's audio that I knew existed on the Internet. I got tired of waiting for someone else to do it and finally created my own poetry audio link list.

The majority of these links are based on poets and poetry schools I am familiar with or am continually discovering. If you are aware of addition poetry audio links, please e-mail me, so that I can update the site.

The link list is intended to be of poets reading their own original work. The few exceptions are in the Poets Reading Other Poets page because I love Poets who read and the Poems read. Another exception is The Poetry of Emily Dickinson read by Laura Lee Parrotti because we can't, for so many reasons, expect Emily Dickinson to read them herself.

Occasionally links to sound files may not be working, such as the link of Walt Whitman reading America. I believe this is due to a problem somewhere on the site's server. I have left the link on my list because it is my hope that problem will be corrected, or possibly other computers might be able to access the link successfully. If you believe the problem link is due to my own site, please e-mail me so I may rectify the error.

I have tried whenever possible to include the off-site texts for the poems. In most cases I only search for the text at the time I originally post the link. If you know of an Internet copy of any of these poems, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Link Organization Key

Links are organized alphabetically by poet's name, individual poems, multiple poems, readings, then interviews.

Poet's Names: contains links to websites about the poet. Most links are from The Academy of American Poets. When the link was unavailable from The Academy, I used the best web site I was able to find, preferably with bio, bibliography and other website links.

Sometimes the same poem might appear multiple times. In this case, the addition links are from difference sound files. I include all sources I can find because of possible quality variation or in case links become disabled with my knowledge.

(text): The link will take you to the site where the sound file originated with text of the poem. The link will open in a new window.

(site): The poem's text is not available on the sound file's originating site. This link will take you to the page with the sound file link. The link will open in a new window.

(off-site text): When the text is not available on the sound file's originating site, I try to provide the text of the poem from another Internet site whenever possible. The link will open in a new window.

(wmp), (au), (wav) (QT) (RA download): sound file format. See how to listen. When no file type is given, the file is in RealAudio.
